Indigenous Rights intern, Permanent Mission of New Zealand to the United Nations

The New Zealand Mission to the United Nations is seeking applications from AUT to fill a 4-month internship starting March 2018. It is an opportunity to bring New Zealand’s foreign policy to life on the international community’s largest stage.

The Mission are seeking applicants with experience and knowledge of human rights focusing on indigenous and/or women’s rights, to be involved with the Commission on Status of Women (including Pacific Engagement) and the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Additionally, the intern will be exposed to the operations of the Mission and the United Nations. The expectation is that interns will support the Mission’s staff in advancing New Zealand’s interests at the United Nations.

Desired qualifications, skills and experience:
  • Background and/or field of study should be relevant to the work of the New Zealand Mission. Common backgrounds include politics, international relations, international law, economics, human rights, international development, indigenous studies and peacekeeping.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to undertake a wide range of tasks, including administrative tasks
  • Possess a strong delivery focus – sets high standards including accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work within guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships and to work within a team
  • Ability to anticipate issues and problems and think of effective solutions
  • Displays personal integrity and an honest and ethical approach
WORK WILL INCLUDE:

To succeed in the internship, interns should be capable of quickly developing a sound understanding of New Zealand’s foreign policy positions.  Common tasks interns are required to perform include attending and reporting on various meetings and briefings at the United Nations, assisting with research, contributing to high-level visits and providing administrative and event support. It is essential that interns have strong communication skills and excellent judgement.

SUITED TO CANDIDATES GRADUATING WITH:
  • Master of Human Rights
  • Bachelor of Arts majoring in Social Sciences, Conflict Resolution, Maori Development
  • Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts double degree
  • Master of Arts specializing in Social Sciences, Conflict Resolution, Maori Development
PREFERRED DATES:

16 weeks, starting March 2018.

  • One AUT Internz scholarship will be offered to intern at Permanent Mission of New Zealand to the United Nations during 2018.
  • Scholarships will cover airfares to and from New York, G-2 Visa for the duration of the internship, a stipend to support living costs, and travel and health insurance.
  • Interns are required to sign a standard undertaking covering non-government personnel participating in government delegations.
