Research Assistant intern, Smithsonian Institution
This opportunity to intern with the Smithsonian Institution is exclusively for a full-time AUT student completing either a relevant Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree in 2017.
The internship will be with the Smithsonian Institution’s Recovering Voices Initiative at the National Museum of Natural History. Recovering Voices responds to the problem of language and knowledge endangerment by capitalizing on the Institution’s research and collections assets to support communities around the world working towards language, culture and knowledge revitalization.
Recovering Voices is seeking a research assistant from AUT to join their Washington DC based team for a 12-week internship in 2018.
The successful intern should have demonstrable exemplary skills in the archival and historical research and knowledge of film archives, proficiency in the use of excel, and an interest in film.
WORK WILL INCLUDE:
The successful candidate will work directly with the Curator of Globalization to help research catalogue films of Oceanic communities in the National Anthropological Film Collection (http://anthropology.si.edu/naa/home/hsfahome.html). Home to more than 8 million feet of film in a variety of formats (35 mm, 16 mm, 8mm, etc; silent, sync and non-sync sound), the NAFC’s collection is deeply entangled with anthropology’s history and contains unique documents of humanity’s shared history from the 1920s to the present. The research assistant will help survey the collection to detail the archive’s Oceanic films and then select several key collections to research. The resulting data will feed into the wider assessment of the collection.

- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Design
- Bachelor of Communications Study
- Master of Arts in Maori Development
Given the nature of the research, priority will be given to candidates with demonstrable dedication to film and archival research.
PREFERRED DATES:
12 weeks, starting February 2018.
