In the final stages of completing her PhD Benita Sharon Simati Kumar, of Samoan and Fijian-Indian descent, was selected for an internship with the American Museum of Natural History researching and archiving Pacific artefacts.
Assistant Curator Pacific Ethnography at the American Museum of Natural History Dr Jennifer Newell was impressed with Benita's wide-ranging background, saying she brought very valuable perspectives to the museum. "It's been great learning from her."
Benita was a perfect choice for the AUT Internz International Programme.
"I'm not just representing my culture, I'm representing a community of people as a young female academic who is completing her PhD, but also trying to get into academia and work in an institution like this is an amazing opportunity but has also given me the experience that I need to take when I go back home," said Benita.
